Everything We Know About Guillermo del Toro’s Upcoming Movie “Frankenstein,” an Arrogant and Egoistic Scientist

What Guillermo del Toro want to show after Mary Shelley

Not just days or months; believe me, it has been years. Maxican author and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has spoken of his lifelong dream to adapt Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” The acclaimed director, known for his unique blend of dark fantasy, breathtaking visuals, and poignant human stories (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Shape of Water,” “Pinocchio”), views Shelley’s novel as a “Miltonian tragedy”—a profound exploration of creation, responsibility, and what it means to be alive.

Del Toro, whose films include “Hellboy” and “Pan’s Labyrinth,” has amassed in a house outside Los Angeles an enormous collection of horror iconography. “All this stuff feeds you back,” he says.Photograph by Josef Astor

Del Toro has hinted that his “Frankenstein” will lean heavily into the philosophical and emotional depth of the original novel rather than focusing solely on jump scares. He aims to capture the essence of Shelley’s “most personal film,” diving into the complexities of Victor Frankenstein and his creature with a heart often missing from more conventional horror portrayals. He already proved himself in 2004’s action and horror film Hellboy. After all, you will be transported directly into the 19th century by the meticulous attention to detail, atmospheric lighting, lavish production design, and teamwork. He is sufficiently established to revive Gothic in the twenty-first century.

The Cast and Trailer

The film boasts a star-studded cast that promises powerful performances starring Oscar Isaac, Maestro of Monsters, who appeared in “The King of Kings,” released in April 2025. Also, Australian actor Jacob Elordi as the monster, British-born Mia Goth, who has worked in many films, including the recent Blade [2025]. Her unsettling charisma made her role highly anticipated. Another famous villain who has received Oscars is Christoph Waltz, who was recently seen in a comedy film, Old Guy, in 2024. Therefore, any other talented actors, including Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance, Ralph Ineson, and Burn Gorman.

With such a formidable lineup, the performances alone are guaranteed to be a highlight of the film.

The Plot, Release Date and Plotform Where You Can Take A Deep Dive into Shelley’s Vision

While specific plot details for del Toro’s “Frankenstein” are kept under wraps, the director has consistently expressed his desire for a faithful yet unique interpretation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. One thing is for sure: the core narrative will undoubtedly revolve around Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egoistic and obsessive scientist who attempts to unlock the secrets of life and death, ultimately creating a sentient, grotesque being. The story is a gothic tragedy exploring themes of creation and death, like paying God.

Frankenstein is a masterpiece from a master, yes. Del Toro's long-held passion for the story promises a deeply personal and meticulously crafted film. The unparallel visuals that expect breathtaking production design and atmospheric cinematography. And the cast brought life to each character, like Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz, leading an incredibly talented ensemble.

Del Toro has hinted at blending elements from both “Frankenstein” and “Bride of Frankenstein” while also emphasising the “adventure” aspects of the creature’s journey. Early teasers and comments suggest a focus on the tragic, emotional core of the novel, possibly even featuring the Arctic pursuit that frames Shelley’s original story. It’s expected to delve deeply into the creature’s perspective, fostering empathy for the “monster.” Don’t forget to save the date. The trailer is already out. Mark your calendars for a Netflix exclusive, and get ready to witness this epic reimagining from the comfort of your home! Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” is scheduled for a November 2025 release on Netflix.

This highly anticipated film was initially teased at Netflix’s Tudum event, where a glimpse of Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein offered a tantalising preview of the dark, gothic world del Toro is crafting.
