What started as a timid Viking befriending a feared dragon has now grown into a universe of legend in 2025. Compared to 2010, this year the movie has stunning visuals and stirring soundtracks to unforgettable characters who fly straight into our souls—this is a saga that taught us how to ride with courage, love without fear, and say goodbye when it’s time to let go. We are going to discuss all the franchise “How to Train Your Dragon” movies here.

Soaring Through the Skies: The How to Train Your Dragon Movie Universe, From Animation to Live-Action Magic, all movie list

1. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

The Beginning of a Friendship That Changed the Skies

Released in March 26, 2010, it’s here we meet Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III—awkward, brainy, and painfully out of place in a world where dragon-slaying defines manhood. But instead of slaying a Night Fury, he saves it. That single act ignites a revolution. With Toothless, Hiccup redefines what it means to be a hero. The animated movie was directed by Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois and made so much noise around the young kids and parents that it grossed 494.8 million at the box office worldwide.

Thus, the movie taught us that choosing peace is sometimes the most courageous course of action.

2. How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

Dean returned in 2014 with a story that made the box office total jump to 621.5 million, which was more than his previous earnings. When Bonds Are Tested, Legends Are Forged. Voiced by Djimon Hounsou, Jay Baruchel, and Cate Blanchett, Time has passed. Together, Hiccup and Toothless are now exploring uncharted territory and uncovering secrets. Hiccup has to confront the monster Drago—and the man he is growing into—when his mother, Valka, reappears and war threatens to destroy everything.

A sequel that dared to grow deeper and darker—and soared higher for it.

Compared to his previous franchise film, Dean’s earnings were lower. Murray Abraham, America Ferrera, and Jay Baruchel are among the voice actors. The film grossed $521.7 million at the box office.

A finale that broke us gently, reminding us love sometimes means letting go.
