In the shadow of music legend Bob Dylan, an obscure singer found his own path to success. Despite vocal limitations, his guitar skills caught Dylan’s attention, leading to a collaboration that propelled Dylan to European fame. Knopfler emerged from under Dylan’s shoulder.

Hardly anyone saw him coming, almost no one knew his talent. But the singer in question slowly charted his own course. He grew up in the background of one of the greatest singers of the 1960s and 1970s. he stood in the shadow of the man who once said: “It’s not difficult at all to write a hit, you can write about anything, the hits pass by daily on the street you walk on.The bad singer listened to the top artist who also earned the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016, Why? This was because, according to the jury, he had the: “Greatest American song tradition with new poetic expressions.”

Who was that top artist?

We all know the top artist we are referring to as the man who turned the following songs into world hits: “Blowing in the wind, Mr. Tambourine man, like a rolling stone and Lay lady lay.” I am of course talking about Bob Dylan, the man who enchanted entire festivals in the sixties and seventies of the last century and is still one of the big folk music stars in the world, everywhere he goes the stadiums are still full at his concerts.

What did the worst singer do on Bob Dylan?

Bob had hired the unknown singer because he wanted to force a bigger breakthrough for himself and his music in Europe and the rest of the world. According to many, the stranger could sing badly, according to those people he talked his records together. But this bad singer could play the guitar very well. According to Dylan, he had the sound needed to become a superstar in Europe. the men went into the studio together and the following songs were the result: “Don’t fall apart on me tonight, knocking on heaven’s door, and license to kill.”

Dylan broke through in Europe.

Dylan became more famous in Europe and the gentlemen went their separate ways again. There was a lot going on in the music world at that time, punk was in its twilight years, a lot of people were tired of this style of music and were looking for something else. At that time, people longed for more melody in music. Also, at that time, there were many manufacturers of music equipment who wanted to improve their marketing and sales figures by linking them to an artist or a certain type of music, a well-known company that needed promotion at that time was the Dutch company Philips from Eindhoven.

Was it the “dream combination?”

The company had invented a sound carrier, the compact disc, which was thought to reproduce the music sounds as very true-to-life, this product had to be promoted by a band that had to be able to match the sound of that compact disc with its live music. In their search for the bond that Philips should be able to live up to, they ended up in England with an unemployed history teacher, as was written at the time. His name was Mark Knopfler. Knopfler, along with his brother David and four other members (Roy Bitan, John Isley, Sid McGinnis, and Pick Withers) who is now a highly regarded gospel singer, had formed the band Dire Straits.

The Dire straits conquered the world.

The music of the Dire Straits (loosely translated: “being seriously cornered.”) conquered the world like a “bolt from the blue.” Suddenly, punk music was of a “lesser” order for many people. “Sultans Of Swing” was the title of the first single. On this album, Mark Knopfler immediately asserted himself as a very great guitar talent, almost virtuoso. His solos touched everyone’s heart. The title of his debut LP in 1978 was as if it could not be otherwise: Dire Straits. On this LP the band performed several songs such as: Down to the waterline, Six bladed knife and Wild West End.

The show went on.

Soon the second album “Communique” was released with songs like: Once upon a time in the west and “Lady Writer” and of course not to forget: “Porto Belle” about the neighborhood and art and antique market in London. This was followed by 4 more studio albums, all of which were a great success. The album that probably captured the imagination of many was “Brothers in Arms.” This album contains the songs “Money for Nothing” and “Brothers in Arms.” Two icons of pop music. Money for Nothing was written specifically to promote the television channel MTV at its inception.

Mark Knopfler in 2024.

In the eyes of many people, Knopfler has changed the music world despite his “distinctive” voice. Now, in 2024, he is hardly on the concert stage. But he helps other artists in his London studio on their way. These artists like to make their recordings with the sympathetic singer. Every now and then Mark and his regular accompanist Guy Fletcher add a brilliant cover of his earlier instrumental hit “Going home”, “Theme from Local Hero” which he plays together with more than a hundred other top guitarists for the benefit of the children’s cancer fund in England. Film music Mark’s second great love, where he doesn’t have to sing!
