Ending Explained: Kantara: Chapter 1, the highly anticipated prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara, culminates in a visually spectacular and spiritually resonant climax that not only resolves the immediate conflict but also plants the seeds for the original film and the next chapter in the franchise.

Set in the 4th century CE during the Kadamba dynasty, the story follows Berme (Rishab Shetty), a tribal warrior chosen to protect the Kantara forest and its people from the oppressive greed of the Bangra royal family, primarily the new king Kulashekhara, and the dark magic wielded by the rival Kadapa tribe.

The Climax: Betrayal and Divine Possession

The film’s final act begins with a crushing realization: Berme’s love interest, Princess Kanakavathi (Rukmini Vasanth), is the true mastermind behind the mayhem. Manipulated by the Kadapa tribe, Kanakavathi seeks to seize the divine power of Kantara’s protector spirits, Panjurli and Guliga, for her own kingdom’s gain. She attempts to cage the deities using forbidden rituals, leading to a mysterious illness among the children of the Kantara tribe and threatening the balance between the mortal and spiritual worlds.

In a desperate search for power to counter the black magic, Berme is guided back to the sacred well where he was found as an infant. Diving in, he discovers a hidden chamber containing a Shivalinga and a divine Trishul (trident).

The Battle for Divine Power

The true transformation begins when Berme faces a terrifying Brahmarakshaswithin the hidden chamber. Injured, he is forced towards the trident. As he pulls the trident from the ground, the monstrous figure bows before him, signifying Berme’s awakening and his mastery over the primordial spiritual forces of the forest.

In the final, goosebump-inducing battle against the forces of Kanakavathi and her father, Berme is possessed by the divine spirits. Initially channeling Guliga Daiva(the ferocious protector spirit), Berme confronts Kanakavathi. When she taunts the Daiva, Guliga declares that her end will come from a feminine power. The powerful goddess Chavundi (or Chamundi), the sister of Guliga, then possesses Berme, enabling him to assume an Ardhanarishvara-like form of divine fury. In this possessed state, Berme defeats and kills both Kanakavathi and the King, Rajashekhara, restoring peace and reclaiming the Daivas from their dark enchantment.

The Vanishing and the Sequel Tease

With the conflict resolved, Berme returns to the same sacred well where his journey began. He leaps into the depths and disappears, transcending his mortal form to become one with the Daiva—a moment suggesting he has achieved immortality and become a protector spirit himself.

The film then returns to its framing narrative, with a village elder recounting the legend to a child. When the child asks what became of the well, the elder smiles and says, “That is another tale… for another time.” A title card then appears, officially announcing the next installment: Kantara: A Legend Chapter 2. The fact that Berme disappears in the same well where the characters Annappa and Kaadubettu Shiva vanished in the original timeline explicitly connects this prequel to the 2022 film, confirming Berme as the mythical ancestor and laying the groundwork for the next story.

The ending serves as a triumphant mythological spectacle, confirming the cyclical nature of divine intervention and human greed in the Kantara universe. It completes Berme’s journey from a tribal orphan to a divine legend and establishes the deep, enduring connection between the forest people and their Daivas.
