Solitude as Poetic Revelation

The Girl as a Universal Symbol

The text opens with the image of an exhausted girl after fighting with “the waters, the crying, and the solitude“. The choice of childhood as the protagonist gives the poem a strong symbolic charge: the girl represents innocence and vulnerability but also the capacity for wonder and rebirth. The empty boat and the immense sea function as metaphors for helplessness, a classic setting in the poetic tradition that is re-signified here.

The Shift Inward

The decisive moment occurs when the protagonist, “closing the eyes, opened the soul.” This contrast between the exterior and the interior constitutes the core of the poem: true vision is not achieved with physical sight but with spiritual openness. Solitude then becomes the fertile ground where the girl discovers an invisible company: angels, calm, light, and a “sacred air” that descends to dispel fear.

The Transformation of Pain

One of the most notable expressive findings is the change in perspective regarding the sea. The waters that were once adverse become benevolent: “They kissed her legs.” Hostility gives way to tenderness, revealing how the environment is transformed when one’s gaze is purified. This reconciliation with nature is reminiscent of the Spanish mystical tradition, where the divine is manifested in the everyday through natural symbols.

The Final Lesson

The poem culminates with a revelation that transcends the personal: the girl, who was crying before, now “found herself forever with laughter in her eyes and peace in her soul“. The conclusion is clear and resounding: authentic company arises from self-love and the bond with the sacred. Orozco thus proposes a response to solitude that is not evasion or resignation but rather inner growth.

A Poetic Voice Between the Intimate and the Transcendent

“Soledad” dialogues with a long tradition of spiritual and existential poetry, from mystics to contemporaries who seek meaning in the midst of the modern void. However, Julia Orozco‘s voice maintains a particular freshness: her simple and evocative language brings the transcendent experience closer to a wide audience, without losing depth or delicacy.

In this poem, solitude is not defeat but revelation. The girl who seemed lost discovers that the light has always been within her. And in that discovery, the author invites us to look beyond absence, toward a horizon where poetry becomes eternal company.

La niña inocente lloraba,
en la barca de la mar,
con luz allá en el alma,
y lágrimas en el pensar.

Llegó un día en que llanto
llegó como río Bravo,
y encendiendo su Amor
soñó con vida sin prisas
y luz en el corazón.
Niña que fuiste creciendo
como me crecen los mares,
seme por siempre feliz,
pues aunque los años pasen,
serás por siempre esa niña,
en un cuerpo de mujer.

Julia Orozco’s poem, “Soledad” (Solitude), in English

The innocent girl was crying,

in the boat on the sea,

with light there in her soul,

and tears in her thoughts.

One day the crying

came like the Rio Bravo,

and lighting up her Love

she dreamed of a life without haste

and light in her heart.

Girl you who were growing

as the seas grow for me,

be happy forever,

for even if the years pass,

you will always be that girl,

in a woman’s body.
